The Long Way Home:
Finding a Path Back to Your Estranged Adult Child

Your child has stopped returning your calls. The holidays feel unbearable. You've prayed. You've reached out. And still — silence. There is a path forward. It begins not with your child changing, but with you.

Family estrangement is one of the quietest griefs in Christian communities. Parents who are suffering in near-total silence, unsure whether their faith has anything to offer them beyond judgment or platitudes.

You love your child. They are not in your life. And you don't know what to do that you haven't already tried.

"Does she know that you think she's wrong? Then you don't tell her again. You love her."

— Dr. Ronald Pierce, Professor Emeritus of Bible & Theology, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University

This webinar is built on a simple but demanding conviction: holding your convictions and being in unconditional relationship with your child are not mutually exclusive. But getting there requires something harder than waiting and more Christlike than either condemnation or capitulation.

What You Will Receive

Honest answers. A real framework. Concrete next steps.

In 90 minutes, we cover what most Christian resources on estrangement won't touch and give you something to actually do when it's over.

  • What the research actually saysWhy adult children estrange and why the cause is almost always different from what parents assume. The myth of the sudden cut-off. What clinical research tells us about what actually leads to repair.

  • A theologically grounded frameworkDrawn from Romans 14–15 and the work of Dr. Ronald Pierce (Talbot/Biola), this framework does not ask you to change your theological convictions. It asks something harder.

  • A staged, practical processFour stages from inner reckoning to making contact to sustaining a restored relationship with specific, actionable steps at each stage that you can begin this week.

  • A reframe of the prodigal sonThe story you've been using to make sense of this situation may have you standing in the wrong place in it. This shift changes everything.

  • Honesty about what this costsReconciliation may require more of you than you have been led to believe including, sometimes, the support of your church community. We name this honestly.

Who This Is For

This webinar is for you if —

You have lost contact with an adult child and don't know where to begin or whether beginning is even possible.

You have tried to reach out and been met with silence, anger, or conditions you didn't expect.

Your estrangement involves an LGBTQ+ adult child and your faith community has not given you a path forward that honors both your convictions and your child.

You are a pastor, counselor, or church leader who wants to better support the parents in your congregation who are carrying this quietly.

The Framework

Four stages. Real work. No shortcuts.

Genuine reconciliation across deep difference does not happen in a single conversation or gesture. The webinar walks through each stage honestly including what it costs and what it requires.

Stage One

Coming to Yourself

The interior work that must happen before any contact. Honest reckoning with what your actions communicated and what actually motivates your desire to reconcile.

Stage Two

Arising and Going

Making contact in a way that is genuinely about your child, not about your need for resolution. What to say, what not to say, and how to send a letter that can actually be received.

Stage Three

The Long Road Home

If and when your child responds how to listen, how to receive anger, how to accept the conditions your child sets, and what welcoming them actually looks like in practice.

Stage Four

Sustaining the Relationship

Reconciliation is not a problem to be solved. It is a relationship that must be continuously chosen including through the grief of what cannot be recovered.

A Note on Theology

This framework does not ask you to change your convictions.

It asks something harder: that you stop making your child pay for them.

Dr. Ronald Pierce, Professor Emeritus of Bible and Theology at Biola University's Talbot School of Theology, is non-affirming on questions of same-sex relationships. He has not changed his reading of Scripture. And he has spent the last decade in genuine friendship and collaboration with people whose lives and theology differ profoundly from his own.

His work — and this webinar — is grounded in Romans 14–15, where Paul instructs a divided community not to resolve its deep differences, but to refuse to make fellowship conditional on agreement.

The slope, as Pierce notes, is slippery in both directions. This framework is about staying on the path.
